Proud to be Chicago: Architecture and Design Experiences

Chicago's world-class architecture is widely recognized for its powerful influence on building design. The Sears Tower, the Hancock Center and the Aon Center may be the most recognizable structures in the city's superb skyline but scattered throughout the downtown are many other gems including some of the world's first skyscrapers, flagship department stores, Art Deco masterpieces and important American Modernist buildings.

The Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) is the preeminent organization dedicated to bringing these amazing buildings to life. With an unequalled program of public tours (each led by a CAF trained and certified volunteer docent/guide), free exhibitions and an interpretive center featuring a scale model of downtown, visitors and residents alike can discover the remarkable story of how Chicago emerged as the first city of American architecture. These tours are of particular interest to tour operators and meeting planners as they are affordable, suitable for groups and can be arranged on a private basis if needed.

Among the more than 85 different public tours offered by CAF (including the renowned Official Architecture River Cruise) are three that visit that grand emporium to be found on the block bounded by State, Randolph, Wabash and Washington - Macy's on State Street. The Architecture of Culture and Commerce, Tiffany on Wednesdays and Macy's on State Street tours each examine a significant aspect of the commercial and decorative history of the city as it evolved into the preeminent business and cultural center in the Midwest. Don't miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in this rich legacy and exciting history.
